GRAND KNIGHT REPORT
William
Renton, Jr. 727-1187
rentonw@bellsouth.net
Brothers, we
had and extremely busy month as it relates to service projects,
meetings and special fund raisers and we showed that he are a
great organization comprised of special Christian gentleman. We
started January with the untimely death of our Brother Hal Shea
III and we supported his family (which includes his father Past
GK Hal Shea Jr.), said a Rosary led by Sir Knight Joseph Scuderi
at his wake and had a large number of Knights attended his
funeral on Monday January 18. We had an officers meeting on the
11th, and Area C meeting on the 16th, a Council meeting on the
18th and had five officers attend Grand Knights Day on the 31st
where we contributed over $2,600 to the YEP Program. We enjoyed
two New Orleans Saints Playoff victories and their 1st ever trip
to the Super Bowl where they beat the Colts 31-17. We had a
First Degree initiation on January 20, and we initiated two new
members. We conducted our first trash bash on January 23 since
the road construction of Highway 190 at our traditional location
between East Causeway Approach and Asbury Road. We had a family
Mass at 9 a.m. on January 24 and conducted our Council Free
Throw Contest on January 30 with 11 participants, our largest
turnout in years. We also were notified on January 20, by
Supreme Knight Carl Anderson, that Deputy Grand Knight Wes
Russell and his wife Terry were selected at random to receive a
Holy Family Gift to honor his selection by our Council as Family
of the Month for December.
On January 30, approximately 20 Knights and a large
number of their family members worked and participated in the
Ride for Gabby event in Mandeville. This event consisted of a
500 mile bike ride that Brother Mo Chiasson did in two days with
sponsorships available and a large party and auction of donated
items all to raise money for this family whose daughter Gabby
has been fighting Neuroblastoma for the past 3 years. This
cancer is rare and her treatment has taken the family to New
York, Houston, Philadelphia and Children’s Hospital in New
Orleans. Though the battle against this horrible disease has
been long, Gabby and the family have fought the hard fight and
never wavered in their faith in God, their family, friends and
Church. The organization Friends in Need is handling the fund
raising effort and the event was a great success, raising
approximately $40,000 to date. If you wish to donate send your
check to Friends in Need, PO Box 56475, Metairie, La., 70055.
While we have had a tremendous month Brothers, we are
entering our most active time of the fraternal year and we have
a number of events that need your participation. February 16 is
Mardi Gras and you know what that means. Lent starts on Ash
Wednesday and our Fish Fries are scheduled for the first 5
Fridays. We will need lots of help on Feb 19, 26, March 5, 12
and 19. Mark your calendar and volunteer your time. As you all
know this is our biggest fund raiser of the year and I would
hope everyone can at least give a few hours and come and eat.
We have the best deal on a fried catfish dinner on the North
Shore we hope of membership supports the event and encourage
their friends and neighbors to come eat. If you need more
information call Past Grand Knight Brother Mike Bernard at 985
674-9746.
We also
invite all Knights to participate in the State Bowling
Tournament which will be held in Mandeville at Tiffany Lanes on
the Weekends of February 20 and 21 and February 27 and 28. This
is a good time and we have had to travel to Lafayette for the
past couple of years to enjoy the fellowship of our Brothers
from around the State and have a good time. Some registration
money is available if you are interested. For more information
contact Brother Larry Fertitta at 778-9489.
Our Knights of the Month are Walter Smith and Bryan
Lemoine, and our Family of the Month is Bobby and Kimberly
Zimek. All of these members stepped by and were heavily
involved in our Council’s activities.
Vivat
Jesus!

Brother Knights,
Thank you to
all Brother Knights that have started out the new year 2010,
with such a bang. Attendance has been awesome for Hal Shea III,
both wake and interment, two new Knights joined the Council on
January 20, the YEP contribution exceeded our assessment, and
both the Trash Bash and the fund raiser for Gabby Chiasson and
Family were complete successes. Once more, thank you.
Congratulations to Walter Smith and Bryan Lemoine who are both
Knights of the Month and to Bobby and Kimberly Zimek, Family of
the Month.
Our Lenten
fish fry’s will be starting Friday, February 19th so mark your
calendars and plan your Lenten Fridays so you can have a fun
time with your Brother Knights at least once this year. Call
Past Grand Knight Mike Bernard at 985-674-9746.
You may
bring a guest who is considering joining the Knights, to help at
a fish fry. This is a great recruiting tool because a candidate
can meet the Knights and experience the enjoyment all of us
feel, working the fish fry’s.
Attendance at the Fish Fry’s is always good in the beginning but
drops from week to week. If you can attend one or a couple, you
might consider planning to make up this difference. Any of you
who have been MIA (Missing In Action), please plan to help with
at least one of the Friday Fish Fry’s. You too will have a
great time and perform a generous act.
Lastly, please spread the word throughout your neighborhood and
colleagues at work, inviting them to take advantage of our
Lenten Friday fish fry’s.
Mardi Gras
is Tuesday, February 16th and the Knights of Columbus will hold
The State Bowling Tournament Saturday and Sunday January 20th
and 21st in Mandeville. Contact Worthy GK CONTACT
_Con-42D56B3A4A Bill Renton with any questions (985-727-1187).

My Brother Knights,
Membership recruitment is everyone’s responsibility. Recruiting
new members is vital to the survival of our Order. You don’t
have to do it all, but please do your part. Try to recruit one
new member this year. If we all try, we will achieve our goal.
During the Lenten Fish Fry dinners we all talk to a lot of
gentlemen. Don’t forget to ask every one you talk to if he would
like to join our Order.
Are you considering a career change? Have you ever thought about
Knights of Columbus Insurance as a career opportunity? The
Agency is looking for Field Agents to represent the insurance
program and they offer a complete benefits package with this
full-time position. Contact me so I can put you in touch with
Kirk Duplantis, the new General Agent in Baton Rouge.
How long has it been since you talked to a Field Agent? Please
call Len Hebert (624-3047) and invite him to visit with your
family to explain all the products and benefits offered by the
Order. You’ll be glad that you did.
When was the last time you attended a First
Degree? We have one every month. Please join us and watch some
new candidates become Knights. We are still in desperate need of
backup members for the First Degree Team. Please talk to Larry
Fertitta (674-2571) or me to learn how you can help. This is not
a full time job, just a commitment to be available if one of the
regulars has to miss a Degree. If you are even the least bit
interested, please talk to one of us before deciding not to be
involved.

My Brother Knights,
I can’t believe it’s time for our Lenten Fish Fry! Our
Council’s fish fry’s are a great opportunity to meet potential
new members and explain our service and philanthropic
programs. This year I’ll be close to the ticket table handing
out promotional material and walking around the cafeteria
meeting with potential members. Please encourage your friends to
visit with me and learn more about our Council.
Remember, each new member you recruit will earn award points
redeemable for Knights of Columbus merchandise. I look forward
to your support.
Vivat Jesus!

Once again Lent is
here. We have no activities planned for the coming month, so we
can focus our attention and energy on the Friday Fish Fries.
Many volunteers will be needed. Even if you can only work an
hour or two, see Mike Bernard.
Tonight I want to talk about prayer in your life – private
prayer, not public prayer. When we attend mass we say public
prayers. At our K. C. meetings we say public prayers. Private
prayers are those one-on-one conversations we don’t have often
enough with God. In which we use our own words to talk about
what bothers us and let our true feelings be known. Let it all
hang out. Why not?? We worship a Living God, a God who loves
us and cares. And finally private prayer includes learning how
to listen, and how to hear God’s answer.
Talk to Him as you would your best friend. And when you ask for
something, ask every day for three weeks. And remember that
listening is different for everybody. Each of us must make this
discovery for himself. And once you do, your life will never be
the same. I promise.
Brother
Knights,
Vivat Jesus!

To all of our ladies
who have a birthday this month we wish you a HOLY and HAPPY
BIRTHDAY
Brothers, one thing
I’ve noticed, as I type up the birthday list, there are many
Brothers that have not been to a meeting recently. That’s a
shame because there is so much to be gained by attending the
meeting. We have a strong and active Council and we need
everyone to attend a meeting at least once in a while. Your
opinions are every bit important as any other Brother and the
Council can only benefit from them IF you attend a meeting and
let them be heard. It does no good to make suggestions if you do
not present them to THE COUNCIL, at a meeting. Please try to
make the next one.
Vivat Jesus!

KNIGHTS
Al Herron, Past Grand Knight,

The New Orleans
Saints have won the Super Bowl and are CHAMPIONS in more ways
than one. It goes to show what can be accomplished with hard
work, cooperation with others, and determination when you set a
goal and WORK AT IT.
That can apply
to the Council and becoming a Star Council again. We’ve done it
before and we can do it IF we put our collective minds to it.
Work together, if you know of someone who is interested in
becoming a Knight and you know a Brother Knight who knows him
the two of you should get together and go talk to him, Invite
him to a pre-meeting meal and introduce him around, make him
feel welcome, and WANT to be part of us. Show him around the
hall, let him see our trophies and awards, and explain to him
what is required to receive them. Let him know we are an active
Council and help many worthy causes. He can be a help to us and
bring us new ideas on how we can be of more help to more folks.

AN ECONOMIC MUST
Do you have seat
belts in your car? Of course you do! Aren’t you certain that you
have one for every member of your family? Would you buy an
automobile that only provided one “belt” -----that being for
you?
But would believe
that family after family with whom I visit are running along
with one “belt” of insurance on the father. Somehow, the common
opinion seems to be that death will strike only the father,
not the mother.
Today, insuring
your wife’s life is an economic must. With “wife” insurance,
should death occur, you have a fighting chance to retain at
least a semblance of a home for your children.
Call me today to
discuss these needs.
VIVAT JESUS!
